Protests in Prague: 8,000 Dairy Farmers Converge

17 March 2009

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC - They came from different European countries to protest against the low milk producer prices. Last year the prices went down rapidly and are now at a level of 20 cents in some countries.

The participating farmers demanded active measures of the EU to confront the current crisis. The new EU-members also demanded the same financial support of the EU as the old members are getting.

Protests of that sort are not seldom in the last months. In Bulgaria, Greece and Latvia manifestations have also taken place and the milk delivery stopped in some European countries. These incidences have highlighted the critical situation of the dairy market across Europe
