In addition, Hood has told 14 other herds they must cut production by 15 percent. According to Brownfield, all of the herds are in two counties in Maine.

Transportation costs were part of the problem for Hood; the milk is shipped to a processor in New York then brought back to Maine for sale. A company spokesperson says with the downturn in the economy, the demand for organic milk has not caught up with production.

There are 72 organic dairy herds in Maine selling to Hood, Organic Valley and Ho-rizon Co-op. The 22 Hood dairies hope one of the other processors will pick up their milk.
