Livestock auction markets and large abattoirs are increasingly concerned with maintaining viable supplies of livestock, reports the Daily Post.

The news agency says that a major new strategic action plan developed by Hybu Cig Cymru has highlighted recent drastic falls in stock levels.

Between 1999 and 2008 the Welsh breeding ewe flock shrunk 29 per cent while over the past four years the Welsh beef herd fell 8 per cent and dairy cows by 7 per cent.

Worst affected was the subsidy-free pig sector, which contracted by 73 per cent to just 3,000 head in the 11 years since 1997.
