Dairy UK Embraces Carbon Measurement
UK - Dairy UK has welcomed the launch of a new standard for calculating the carbon footprint of goods and services, and is already helping to apply it to the dairy sector.

Dairy UK says that the Publicly Available Standard 2050 (PAS 2050) gives companies the tools to analyse a product’s life cycle and assess “embedded” carbon emissions, from sourcing raw materials through to packaging and distribution. It is the product of work between the food industry and Defra, BSI British Standards and the Carbon Trust.
Dairy UK Environment Manager Fergus McReynolds said: “We wholeheartedly welcome this much-needed piece of work. For the first time, businesses now have a template for assessing and benchmarking their products’ environmental impact.
“Dairy companies are already examining how to apply PAS 2050 to the specificities of the dairy chain. Using the standard as a foundation, Dairy UK is leading work with its members to construct a robust method for calculating the carbon footprint of different dairy products.
“As an industry, we are well aware of the need to keep reducing our environmental impact. That is why we have agreed a set of demanding environmental targets with Defra in the Milk Roadmap, which will transform the industry over the next decade. PAS 2050 is another tool to boost that process.
“This standard provides a consistent method of carbon footprinting which will allow comparisons between different systems and business models. It is now critical that PAS 2050 is accepted by industry as the basis for all such work.”
