Milk Auction Feels the Squeeze
UK - The Ulster Farmers’ Union says farmers will view this weeks milk auction results with ongoing concern that rising costs are crushing the industry’s ability to be profitable.

The monthly milk auction price fell slightly at this weeks auction. 33 million litres of milk were sold for an average price of 25.1 pence per litre; a fall of 0.4 pence per litre on last months average price.
UFU Deputy President John Thompson said concerns continue to rise among dairy farmers with auction prices falling by a penny and a half in the past two months, despite the continuing high prices of feed, fertiliser and fuel. He also said that prices in the cereals market were back on last year and producers need to see this fully reflected in their feed bills.
John Thompson said; “This time last year auction prices were almost 34 pence per litre. This is a double whammy for producers with falling prices and rising costs. During the Autumn period costs for producers will once again begin to rise putting more pressure on dairy farmers. We are making plans to hold producer meetings in the coming months to look at the many issues which are having an impact on dairy businesses. The current prices being generated by dairy commodity markets are not a sustainable platform for dairy farming in Northern Ireland”.
