Pará Sales of Live Cattle to Lebanon Rise

Some 3,933 animals were exported to Lebanon from Mungubá and Belém ports, in Pará, in July. The value of exports was US$ 2.78 million, according to figures supplied by the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade's Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex).

There was 37% growth in revenues of the state with sales of live cattle to Lebanon when compared to July last year. At the time, farmers from the state of Pará exported to the Lebanese US$ 2 million in live cattle. In terms of units, however, the state of Pará reduced sales of live cattle to Lebanon last month. Shipments totalled 302 animals less than in July 2007, when the state shipped 4,235 animals to the Lebanese market.

The price of cattle exported, however, rose significantly in one year. In the month of July last year, the state of Paraná sold each animal to the Lebanese for US$ 478. Last month, each animal was traded to the Arab country for US$ 707. That is, there was growth of 48% in prices. The state of Pará was the only one in Brazil that exported live cattle to the Arabs in July this year and also last year.

The purchases of animals in July answered to 13% of all that Lebanon imported from Brazil. The Arab country purchased US$ 20.2 million in Brazilian products in the month, against US$ 13.1 million in the same period in 2007. Live cattle came in the second place in the import basket from Brazil, losing only to boneless beef, whose purchased totalled US$ 7.1 million.

Sales to Lebanon also represented a large share o Pará state exports to the Arab world, with 21% participation. The state had revenues of US$ 13.2 million with sales to the region in July, against US$ 13.5 million in the same period in 2007. The product that the state in northern Brazil sold most to the Arab nations was calcinated alumina, followed by live cattle. The list also included beef, heart of palm and pepper.
