The merger was formally announced at this week’s Nantwich International Cheese Show by Dairy UK Director General Jim Begg and BCB Secretary Nigel White.

Cheesemakers have strongly backed the move, with dozens of small- and mediumsized businesses signing up to join Dairy UK.

This extends Dairy UK’s membership and bolsters its ability to represent the interests of the whole dairy industry through political lobbying.

Dairy UK's new cheese members will be welcomed into its Cheese Group and are expected to play a full role in the work of the organisation as a whole.

At the same time, more Dairy UK membrs with cheese interests will now contribute to and benefit from the promotion of the cheese sector under the BCB brand.

Jim Begg, Dairy UK Director General said: "This is a very positive move for the cheese industry as a whole. It strengthens Dairy UK's representation of the sector to government and gives our members access to BCB’s excellent consumer facing work to promote the cheese sector.

We are now all working towards one goal: driving sales and profitability for our members and raising the positive profile of cheese with stakeholders and consumers alike."

Nigel White, Secretary of the BCB said: "This initiative will deliver a more joined up approach to working on behalf of the cheese industry. Members will benefit from the professional lobbying and technical expertise of Dairy UK as well as the consumer facing work undertaken by the British Cheese Board."
