The average price at this week’s auction was 26.5 pence per litre. This is just 0.3 pence per litre up on the June auction and 2.2 pence below the same auction last year.

The UFU Dairy Policy Chairman said; “The price that milk processors were prepared to pay at the July auction sends a very stark message for the future to dairy farmers. At a time of the year when milk production is at its lowest, farmers are faced with the likelihood that the average milk price for this year will not be ahead of last year and yet their production costs have increased dramatically in the same period.”

William continued; “The Union has been highlighting the increase in production costs for some time and yet some sectors of the food chain just don’t seem to be getting the message . Expecting farmers to produce milk at below the cost of production is no way to guarantee future supply. Instead of coming up with excuses as to why they can’t pay any more, milk processors and milk purchasers should be actively marketing product into world markets which are increasingly in need of supplies”
