This as been regarded as the latest sign that new President Raul Castro is looking to individual initiative to stimulate food production.

The move has been seen as a boon to the dairy industry as milk producers in both state and private cooperastives as well as private daifarmers and nowging to be given access to the supplies.

Agricultural sources told Reuters on Monday that Cuba will soon open stores for farmers to buy tools, herbicides, boots and other supplies for the first time since the state took over all the country's shops in the 1960s.

According to reports on TVNZ, the move is also seen as a relaxing of the regime and a sign of economic changes in the pipeline with Raul Castro taking over from his ailing brother Fidel Castro in February.

It is not clear yet whether other farming groups will be given access to the stores.
