VIET NAM - Several companies in Vietnam have been found as adding the prohibited growth-stimulating hormones into foodstuff for cattle. The prohibited hormones were Clenbuterol and Salbutamol, which have been prohibited since 2002. Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat has asked the Animal Husbandry Department under the ministry to examine the use of Clenbuterol nationwide, and discipline the enterprises and individuals who have deliberately added into the foodstuff for cattle.
After inspecting 295 samples taken from 114 out of 249 companies producing foodstuff for cattle, competent agencies have discovered 19 samples (6.4%) provided by six companies positive with Clenbuterol and Salbutamol.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has sent the samples for testing at domestic and Singaporean laboratories.
The Singaporean laboratory has confirmed that it has found Salbutamol in two samples provided by Ha Nam-based Hong Ha Nutrition Company (9,275/4 ppb) and the Binh Duong-based Uni-President Vietnam.
Meanwhile, a private owned pharmaceutical company, specialising in making food for aquaculture has admitted it has used 1.5 kg of Crom-Chelate (the commercial name was Crom-max), containing Salbutamol, to process 300 kg of SINA. The company has ruined the consignment of the product, and has made public about the thing.
Nguyen Dang Vang, Head of the Animal Husbandry Department said that MARD has sent dispatches to the local authorities, where the violated companies are located, informing about the result of the tests.
Mr Vang said that the consignments of products containing the prohibited substances will be ruined, while the violating companies will have to pay a fine of VND20mil ($1,250). The information about the violation will be made public on mass media.
