The quarantine was declared in March this year after the outbreak of foot and mouth disease.

Dr Harman Ssekiwunga, the district production coordinator, said the ban was lifted after realising that the disease had been eradicated.

“We have lifted the quarantine and opened boarders for those trading in animals,” he told Daily Monitor on Monday.
The outbreak killed many animals in Maddu and Kabulasoke sub-counties.

“In developed countries, all sick animals are killed but because we [Ugandans] are poor, we resorted to animal treatment and imposing quarantine,” Ssekiwunga said.
He said the quarantine has affected the district’s income because for over seven months, no tax was levied on cattle traders.

Meanwhile, the district has received 253 local goats from the National Livestock Product Improvement Project (NLPIP).
