Breeding programmes ill prepped for WTO entry

Vang, director of the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development’s Animal Husbandry Department, says that government efforts over the past several years have helped develop the domestic breeding industry, but not enough.

Viet Nam’s domestic breeding efforts have brought the industry’s annual growth rate to a level three times higher than that recorded by the whole agriculture sector. In 2005, for instance, the breeding industry grew by 11.6 per cent compared to the whole-sector growth of 3.2 per cent, Vang says.

However, such development has not yet pushed the industry to contribute between 30 and 35 per cent of the nation’s total agricultural production value as has been expected. It will be difficult for the industry to survive with these numbers during global integration, says Vang.

Between 1991 and 2000, the breeding industry generated 17.9 per cent of the whole agriculture sector’s production value. Five years later, its standing was not much better at only 19.1 per cent, Vang says.
