Money Coming To Great Falls Mad Cow Disease Centre

US - The McLaughlin Research Institute has secured some additional funding to be used in researching degenerative brain diseases.

A grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke has been renewed for another five years and the $7 million will help pay for the continued study on the genetics of Prion susceptibility.

Prions are infectious agents known to cause degenerative diseases of the brain and McLaughlin Research Institute Director Dr. George Carslon says the research is important to Montana's ranching industry.

"Most relevant to Montana are Mad Cow Disease, which was caused feeding contaminated food to cattle. I think more importantly for this state is Chronic Wasting Disease which is a contagious disease of mule deer, elk, whitetail and moose."
