Czech Vets Test 94,000 Cows For BSE, No New Case

PRAGUE - Czech vets have tested 94,000 cows for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease) this year and have not found a single infected animal, the State Veterinary Administration told CTK today.

The last infected cow was detected in December 2006. On the whole, Czech vets have tested 1.14 million animals since the beginning of 2001, finding 26 infected cows.

BSE occurrence decreased last year for the first time after a slight increase in the previous years. Vets found three infected animals in 2006 against eight a year earlier.

Josef Duben, spokesman for the Administration, said the number of BSE cases probably peaked in the Czech Republic as well as in other EU countries last year.
