Four new Irish BSE cases this week

IRELAND - Four new BSE cases were recorded in Ireland this week, according to figures released today by the Department of Agriculture. The department said the disease was detected in two animals in Tipperary and one each in Wexford and Limerick.
All of the infected cattle were more than nine years old, a sign that anti-BSE measures introduced in 1996 and 1997 have proved effective. A total of 64 BSE cases have been recorded so far this year, compared to 104 in the same period last year.
